In 1996, Mrs. Virginia Tsouderos, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and significant personality in Greek public life leading a group of people including politicians, businessmen, scientists, military officers, journalists, lawyers, physicians, public officers and private employees, decided to make a stance against corruption.
To this end, “Transparency International Greece” was born as a national organization, part of a larger international non-governmental organization, called Transparency International (founded in 1993 in Berlin).
Our vision was and still remains to fight indifference and ignorance toward issues of transparency and towards public administration that creates corruption. Our goal is to re-establish institutions and combat corruption on the ground. Therefore, we expect transparent and ethical principles to be implemented for good governance.
Many tried to discourage us by saying that our vision is a futile wish. Nowadays, we admit that corruption undermines our political and financial system and we are proud to contribute to the battle against corruption.
The Memorandum of Association was signed by 26 members on the 28th November 1996.
